Description

This weekend I had the distinct pleasure of meeting a fellow gfxer: Steve/sdavis75. He is not only an excellent photographer, but a great guy as well. We spent the whole day Saturday from morning to sundown on a photo shoot. Check out his awesome photo of a seagull in flight in the elite section. As always comments and critiques are welcome and appreciated.

Canon EOS 20D. ISO 100, f5.6 @ 1/1000sec. 400mm

Not sure whether the white lining is there because the original background was different or there's been a bit too much of sharpening, but the photo itself looks very good, maybe a bit more space on the left would be nice, but as i've said, cool photo :)

So good.

great details on the bird, and for me the white lining
works well, as it breaks the black perfectly

Nicely executed photo. Composition is well done, especially enjoy how you used the dock post as a pedestal lefting Gull slightly off of frame edge. Beautiful grey tones through out its' feathers. Feet, beak, and eye are all generally subdued slightly from soft lighting that seems to be cast on it. Feather became trapped in Gulls' beak, most likely one of its' own feathers.

I saw this last night when you posted but I was too tired to comment! This is perfect, I thought so last night and I stil do. The composition and clarity are right on and the pose of this bird is outstanding; I would normally think that you would want to get the bird from the front or the side, but this angle from the back works so well because he/she is looking "over the shoulder" so to speak, right into the camera.

My only wish is to see a larger version :)

Great job on this one!

Perfect shot. The subtle colors work very well.

Hmmm, I dont want to be the bad guy here. But Im not really a fan of this image. I dont really like the desat work, maybe its the bright eye that throws it off for me, but it just doesnt look attractive to me. The clarity of the image is impresive, very crisp, and the DOF is beautiful.

Inabottle: There was no desat work done to this shot. Other than a very slight level adjustment no other color correction was used... I'm not sure why you would think this image was desaturated in any way.

Avatar sdavis75

Yep, I can vouch for that. Using levels, John has adjusted the shadows a bit in order to darken an already very dark background. Beyond that, the color as natural, as the camera captured it.

Looks odd still to me, all the colors so muted seem desaturated. Anyways, still dont like the appearance of the colors. Desaturated or natural.

The desaturation appeals to me. I guess in the end it's just a matter of taste. Beautiful image.
